India is a country which is filled with smart and brilliant brains. There are many legendary figures who have never failed in making the nation proud. All the fields of science, art, literature, sports etc has Indian influence. There are Indians who have contributed a lot to the world of science.
The world of physics was also influenced by Indian scientist Satyendra Nath Bose was one such eminent figure who added onto the pride of nation by making certain discoveries in the field of quantum physics. An outstanding physicist with a very sharp mind was born on 1st January, 1894. He was a Bengali, born and brought up in Calcutta. His family was pretty big with he being the eldest among the seven children, the other being daughters.
Bose was a meritorious student. He cleared the entrance of the well-known Hindu School and got fifth position. Later, he joined the Presidency College, Calcutta. He had teachers like J. C. Bose, Prafulla Chandra Ray, etc. A good guidance always leads to success and so Satyendra Nath Bose finished his intermediate studies with flying colours. In 1913, he did his B.Sc. in Mathematics and M.Sc. in mixed mathematics.
Bose was a brainiac since childhood. His interest in science and mathematics developed when he was a child. After his studies, Bose started his career as a lecturer of Physics in University of Calcutta. Bose also studied and researched on quantum theory. But the offenders around tried to bring out mistakes. Frustrated Bose wrote a science article and sent it to Albert Einstein.
The great scientist, Einstein went through the article and found it to be absolutely correct. This is how the golden opportunity of working with Einstein opened up for Satyendra Nath Bose. The article of Bose was translated and published which got him a lot of name and fame. He started working with scientists like Marie Curie and Louis de Broglie.
Satyendra Nath Bose, after starting to work with Einstein came up with the concept of Bosons– a subatomic particle with no integral spin. In the year 1924-25, they gave a new theory to the world of science. It was called the Bose-Einstein Condensation. They explained that when the molecules of a state of matter, say gases are condensing, they come together and settle down to become liquid. This happens because molecules lose energy and thus starts settling down on a metal surface as a liquid. The Bose- Einstein Condensation was indeed the biggest achievement of Satyendra Nath Bose.
Bose didn’t had the doctorate degree. But his intelligence and knowledge was remarkable. Einstein was very much impressed by him and so, on his reference, Bose was appointed as the Professor in Dhaka University till 1945. Bose also designed instruments for X ray crystallography.
Bose died in the year 1974. Throughout his life, he made various new discoveries and added to the world of science. The achievements of Satyendra Nath Bose was honoured by the second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan Award in 1954. In his memory, the Satyendra Nath Bose national Centre was established by the government of Calcutta. The lifetime success of Satyendra Nath Bose was worth giving him the title of ‘The Indian Father of God Particle’!
