An eclipse is an astronomical event that happens when one celestial object moves into the shadow of another. Our earth experiences two types of eclipses namely solar eclipse and lunar eclipse.

Solar eclipse occurs when the moon is in between the planet and also the Sun. There are three types of solar eclipses namely total, annular and partial.

Total solar eclipses occur when the Moon comes between the Sun and Earth and casts the darkest a part of its shadow, the umbra, on Earth.

Annular solar eclipses occur when the Moon covers the Sun’s center, leaving the Sun’s visible outer edges to form a “ring of fire” or annulus around the Moon. 

Partial solar eclipses occur when the Moon comes between the Sun and Earth, but the Moon only partially covers the Sun.

 What time is the Eclipse in India?

This year we will notice partial eclipse will begin few minutes past 8 (8 am)of local time (IST – Indian Standard Time = UTC+5:30) and will end at about 11:30 IST (11:30 am). Annular eclipse on the geographical region begins 9:24 IST, on the geographical region a couple of minutes later – 9:31 IST. Annularity ends at 9:27 IST on the West Coast and 9:35 IST on the geographical region

Watching an eclipse is harmful to the eyes without the safety equipment. The UV radiation can burn the retinas causing serious damage and even cause blindness. Keep your back turned to the sun.

Watching the eclipse using the screen of an optical instrument Such as your mobile phones, televisions or camera screens are perfectly okay.

Use special-purpose solar filters, like eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers, to look at the eclipse, Your protective eyewear needs to have a sun filter or a specially-made pair of eclipse glasses.
