Fun Science Activity is a STEAM-based activity box
designed to invigorate & inspire children through hand’s-on activities and experiments.
The Activity Box comprises of 5 Hand’s on Activity Kits and 10 Tinker at Home activities.

The Materials required for the Hand’s on Activity Kits are provided in the Box and the 10 Tinker at Home activities can be performed using simple materials available at home.

ACTIVITY 1 – CATAPULT

Materials Required

  1. Catapult Base
  2. Catapult Launcher
  3. Ball
  4. Nut and bolt
  5. Foam Fulcrum
  6. Castle Template

PROCEDURE

  1. Fix the Catapult Launcher to Catapult base with help of nut and bolt as shown in the video. (Do not tighten the screw).
  2. Fix the Fulcrum as shown in the video.
  3. Fold the Castle template at the creasing and place it at a distance.
  4. Now place the ball on the Catapult launcher and launch it to score points.

SCIENCE CONCEPT

Energy is categorized as potential Energy and Kinetic Energy.

When the ball is placed on the catapult launcher, the ball holds potential Energy (No movement). But when the ball is launched, it moves which means it holds kinetic energy.

Therefore while the ball is launched, it is converted from potential Energy to Kinetic Energy.

ACTIVITY 2 – LAVA LAMP

Materials Required

  1. Transparent Bottle
  2. Vegetable Oil
  3. Red Colour ink
  4. Antacid
  5. Torch
  6. Foam Stand
  7. Foam Torch Holder
  8. Tinkering Mat
  9. Tissue

PROCEDURE

Note: Spread the tinkering Mat on a plane surface before starting the activity.

1. Fix the Stand as shown in the video.
2. Now fix the torch to the foam holder as shown in the video
3. Fill 1/4th of the transparent bottle with water and add 2 -3 drops of color to it (make sure the water fairly dark in color)

Note: Ink only colors the water and not the oil.

4. Fill the rest of the bottle with Oil
5. Add a small piece of antacid to this immiscible solution of oil and water and close the bottle.
6. Turn on the torch and place the bottle on the stand as shown in the picture
7. Enjoy watching this bubbling reaction under torch light.

Note: When the bubbling stops, add another small piece of antacid.

SCIENCE CONCEPT

The water and oil do not mix because of their density. Since oil is less dense than water, it floats on water. When you add antacid to the bottle, it reacts with water to make bubbles of carbon dioxide.
The bubbles attach themselves to the blobs of colored water and bring them to the top of the bottle. When the bubbles pop, the blobs of colored water fall back to the bottom of the glass.

ACTIVITY 3 – MOUTH ORGAN

Materials Required

  1. Beaker (100ml) -2
  2. Hydrogen Peroxide 60ml – 1
  3. Potassium Permanganate
  4. Spatula-1
  5. Detergent
  6. Transparent Tray -1
  7. Conical Flask -1

Potassium Permanganate solution – This needs to be prepared 15min before the start of the show and cover it with a lid.

  • Take 80ml of regular water in 100ml beaker.
  • Add 3 spatulas full of Potassium Permanganate to the beaker containing water and stir well for 5 min.
  • Add 60ml of Hydrogen Peroxide solution to a different beaker and keep it aside.

PROCEDURE

  1. Place the conical flask in the transparent tray.
  2. Add a capful of detergent to the conical flask.
  3. Now carefully add the prepared Potassium Permanganate solution along the sides of the flask and swirl it around to mix both the solution added.
  4. Carefully add Hydrogen Peroxide solution to the conical flask.

SCIENCE CONCEPT

Note: Before revealing the answer. Ask the students (audience if they can recall all the colored and transparent chemicals that were added to perform the activity and what happened when Hydrogen Peroxide was added?

Appreciate them for the right answers. Always be more encouraging. Do not forget to Tell students the name of the activity .
The molecular formula of Hydrogen Peroxide is H2O2   Potassium Permanganate acts as a catalyst which decomposes Hydrogen Peroxide into water and oxygen molecules.

H2O2 –> 2H2O+O2.

The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide also releases a small amount of heat so the reaction is exothermic. The oxygen released causes the foam to gush out of the conical flask which resembles the form of toothpaste coming out of the tube. Hence it gets its name Elephant Toothpaste.

NOTE

  1. While adding the hydrogen peroxide, keep your hand slightly away from the conical flask as foam would vigorously gush out instantly. Take off your hand immediately as there would be foam gushing out of the conical flask vigorously.
  2. In case if there are lot of students then the performer can pick 3 students from the group and give each students different chemicals(Detergent, Potassium Permanganate solution and Hydrogen Peroxide) and ask them to add it to the conical flask according to the procedure under the performers supervision.

ACTIVITY 4 – BALANCING BIRD

Materials Required

  1. Milk
  2. Transparent Plate
  3. Detergent
  4. Cotton swab / Earbud
  5. Color inks
  6. Beaker 250ml -1

Pour the Milk to the 250ml beaker from the tetra pack.

PROCEDURE

  1. Pour the milk into the transparent plate. Make sure it covers the entire plate. 
  2. Add a few drops of color inks around the milk in different spots.
  3. Dip the Cotton swab/Ear bud in the detergent and Touch the milk.(Do not mix it)
  4. As you touch the color you can see colors spreading and forming a beautiful pattern.

Milk contains a long chain of fatty acids which are connected with each other with a bond. This bond in the fatty acids is broken when it comes in contact with the detergent as it  lowers the surface tension and forms an amazing Milk Art!!

ACTIVITY 8 – Inflate the Balloon

Materials Required

  1. Balloon
  2. Baking soda
  3. Vinegar
  4. Transparent Empty bottle
  5. Spatula
  6. Plastic Funnel

PRO Tip

Before starting the experiment, make sure to check if the balloon is in good condition and not damaged.

PROCEDURE

  1. Take a balloon and place the funnel inside it. Add 6 spatulas full of baking soda to the balloon.(keep it aside on the table)
  2. Carefully pour 60ml of vinegar to the transparent empty bottle
  3. Carefully cover the mouth of the bottle with a balloon (be careful not to drop the baking soda into the vinegar yet).
  4. Once the mouth of the bottle is covered with the balloon, slowly uplift the balloon and allow the baking soda to fall into the vinegar.
  5. Now observe the chemical reactions and effects on the balloon.

SCIENCE CONCEPT

Note : Ask the uses of baking soda and vinegar, chemical name of baking soda, and vinegar and which is an acid and base, why do they see bubbling effect or which gas is liberated.. If the audience is unresponsive, ask them to guess.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), a weak base, and vinegar contains acetic acid (HC2H3O2), a weak acid. When mixed, the two react in an acid-base neutralization reaction. One of the products is carbon dioxide gas (CO2), which causes the bubbling and inflates the balloon.

ACTIVITY 9 – Anti Gravity Water

Materials Required

  1. Hard glass -1
  2. Hard Cardboard – 1
  3. Water
  4. Transparent Tray

Pro Tip

Before starting, ask if the audience knows about gravity and ask them to explain about it or give an example for the same. Here we will not be discussing Gravity. Instead, after turning the glass upside down due to gravity the water should flow down but it dint what caused such magic??  Right it’s not Magic, it’s all about Science.

PREP To BE Done

No prep is required for this experiment. But needs a lot of practice to achieve this experiment. Place a tray underneath before the start of the experiment.

PROCEDURE

  1. Fill the glass with complete water. (Please note: The water needs to be filled up to the brim in an overfilling manner. 
  2. Cover the mouth of the glass with hard cardboard.
  3. Place one of your palm firmly over the cardboard and hold the glass with the other hand. Slowly turn the glass upside down.
    Please note: Do not remove your palm from the cardboard immediately
  4. Now carefully remove your hand from the cardboard  and observe.

SCIENCE CONCEPT

Note : Ask questions to the audience if they have heard about atmospheric pressure.. If yes, ask them to briefly explain about what they know

Atmospheric Pressure acting in the upward direction balances the downward force of the water acting in the cardboard. Hence the card board remains in its position.

ACTIVITY 10 – Bed of Nails

Materials Required

  1. Bed of nails Model
  2. Balloon

Pro Tip

Do not play or try to dismantle the nails from its nail bed. Before starting the experiment, make sure the balloon is not damaged)

PROCEDURE

  1. Place the inflated balloon on a bed of nails and press.
  2. Blow the balloon and tie a knot and press the balloon gradually hard and observe the shape of the balloon.
  3. The balloon will not pop.

SCIENCE CONCEPT

When the balloon is in contact with a large number of nails, the force exerted by the balloon gets distributed amongst multiple nails. Therefore pressure decreases which makes the balloon not to pop.

ACTIVITY 11 – Balloon & Skewer

Materials Required

  1. Balloons -5
  2. Skewers – 5

PROCEDURE

  1. Blow up a balloon
  2. Tie a knot at the end of the balloon
  3. Pierce the pointed tip of the skewer on the thick end of the balloon and push the skewer into the balloon.  Just use a gentle pressure (and maybe a little twisting motion) to puncture the balloon. 

(Please note: To be done only under adult supervision. Make sure not to bring the pointed tip of the skewer near the eyes or play with pointed end.)

4. Push the skewer all the way through the balloon until the pointed tip of the skewer touches the opposite end of the balloon, where you’ll find the other thick portion of the balloon.

SCIENCE CONCEPT

Balloons are made from long chains of molecules called polymers, which are elastic enough to allow the balloon to stretch. The thickened end of the balloon which was chosen to insert the pointed tip of the skewer had less ability to stretch or less elasticity due to which the balloon did not pop!

ACTIVITY 12 – Fire Resistant Balloon

Materials Required

  1. Fevigum
  2. Transparent cup
  3. Wooden fork
  4. Borax Solution
  5. Glitters

PROCEDURE

  1. Pour the entire glue from the fevigum bottle into the transparent cup.
  2. Now add borax solution to the cup, little by little drop by drop, and stir well using the wooden fork.
  3. Continue stirring until it binds together and resembles like dough of bread.
  4. Roll the dough in your hand and make a ball out of it.
  5. Now add glitter to it and watch your glittery bouncing ball bounce!

SCIENCE CONCEPT

This activity demonstrates an interesting chemical reaction, primarily between the borax and the glue. The borax helps to firmly bind the molecules present in the glue so that they hold their shape better.

ACTIVITY 13 – Magic Mud

Materials Required

  1. Corn flour
  2. Water
  3. Transparent tray
  4. Colour ink
  5. Spoon

PROCEDURE

  1. Take some amount of corn flour in the tray.
  2. Add a few drops of colour ink.
  3. Now gradually add some amount of water and mix it using your hand.  
  4. Now take some amount of the corn flour mixture in your hand and try to roll it. (When you apply pressure it becomes solid, when you release it becomes liquid).

SCIENCE CONCEPT

The large corn starch molecules are tangled and are unable to move freely past each other, but when released (opening your hand) the molecules untangle and flow freely (the ooze slides through).
