There are many things that I don’t like about we people; the humans. But I hate one most common character of ours. We humans have a bad tradition of leaving junk items wherever we go. If we go to mountain, ocean, forest… wherever we go we pollute that place by putting waste over there. One interesting fact is that, we have done this junk business even in the Moon…! Humans went to moon and polluted there also. Yes, there is poop on the Moon…!
You might be familiar with the heroic Apollo space mission that has taken two humans to the Moon. Apollo 11 landed on moon on 20th, July, 1969 with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. It was a giant leap for mankind, but I think it was no so good for the Moon. Apollo missions collected approximately 380 kilograms of rocks, dust and other samples from moon on six different missions which conducted during 1970s. So it is so obvious that Apollo astronauts dumped an equal amount of things on moon because the lunar module couldn’t lift of so much weight. So they dumped unwanted stuff and collected necessary items. The unwanted items which including much weird stuff like bags containing urine and poop. But they also have left many other items at the moon’s surface. This article will tell you about some of the interesting and unusual items that have been left on the moon by various astronauts.
Alan Shepard was the oldest person who walked on moon. Even though he was the fifth person to walk on moon, he can be proud of being the first person to play golf on moon. He made two drives using a Wilson branded golf club and one ball went “miles and miles and miles” as he explained later. He did not take back those golf balls.
During Apollo 16 mission, Charles Duke placed photograph of his family on moon. That photograph shows him and his family who were sitting on a bench and he wrote on the back of the photo as “This is the family of Astronaut Duke from Planet Earth. Landed on the Moon, April 1972”.
Lava from Oregon Lake
During Apollo 15 mission, James Irvin placed a piece of solidified lava on moon. It was taken from a lake which is near Oregon. Oregon was the place where NASA astronauts get their training to take rocks.
Aluminum model of an Astronaut was left behind by the Apollo 15 mission. It was of 3.3 inch in length. The model was made by Paul Van Hoeydonck who was a Belgian artist.
There is big list of items which is been left on the surface of moon by various people been there. A medal which honor Astronauts Russian Vladimir Komarov and Yuri Gagarin, a small silicon disk containing messages from 73 world leaders, A golden olive branch, five American flags, twelve pair of boots, film magazines, T V cameras, 12 pair of boots, and many more utility items.
Till now, humans have dumped 187,400 kilograms of items on the Moon during various missions. We have taken 30 kilograms of materials from moon. Out of these artificial objects that we have left on Moon’s surface, we use only the retro reflectors which were for the lunar laser ranging experiments now. Those were left by people went for Apollo 11, 14, and 15 missions. All other items are waste products.
During Apollo 11 mission Neil Armstrong been there for 21 hours and 31 minutes but the later missions went on for up to three days. Twelve humans have walked on the moon and so far we have spent about 300 hours on the surface of Moon. But within that short period of time we managed to dump this much items there and it is a large amount of garbage!
So now it looks like we need to start a Swatchh Moon Abhiyan for cleaning up all the junk items that we have dumped onto moon. Otherwise Aliens (If they exist, do they?) may start an earth mission to dump the junk to where it belonged!
